Keeping the Virtual in Virtual Reality

Daniel stopped this morning, on his way outside to go sledding down the hill at the edge of the yard, to tell  me, in detail, about some video game that he used to not like, but now likes, He took several minutes, all decked out in his sledding outfit, to provide thorough coverage of this exciting game. It turned out to be a game where there's a chest full of weapons and everyone fights to the death.

Then he stopped to assess the likelihood of such an exciting game occurring in the "real" world, and he was surprisingly pessimistic about its prospects in 21st century American life:

"But I don't think that ever happened.  I think that might be sort-of illegal."
