Eight Years into Boyhood
Daniel was telling me, the other day, about an unusual exchange between himself and his day-camp counselor earlier that day. Apparently there was some girl in a bikini - I didn't catch whether it was a picture of some kind or a real girl in a bikini, but somehow an image-or-reality that caught Daniel's attention - and Daniel's reaction was, "Well, that's awkward."
When the counselor - no doubt a budding adolescent - realized that Daniel was describing seeing a girl in a bikini as awkward - for himself and/or for the young lady whose physique was so uncomfortably exposed - the counselor clarified his own position on the matter:
"I love girls in bikinis! And you will too some day."
Of course, I was pretty curious as to what Daniel said in response to this hard-to-imagine projection:
"Nothing, I was too sort-of embarrassed."
And as he reported it, the embarrassment seemed to be back in full swing, as the lad grinned widely, if sheepishly, almost squinting as he described the moment.
