Pokemon and Gastronomy
It's one of the oldest platitudes in the world, but of course it's true: if you want to relate well to people, you talk about the things that interest them.
Ian and I have been talking a lot about Pokemon these days.
Ian wants me to ask him questions about Pokemon - things I'd "specifically like to know" about them. It takes a little thought sometimes, but I can find some questions to ask.
One of the things that came up was whether people in Pokeworld actually eat any Pokemon. Pokemon seem to be pets to those people, but a pet to one person can be a tasty treat to another. When I was a lad, there was some idle speculation about getting a pet pig. I really wanted a dog, which I ultimately got, but I was intrigued about the whole pig-thing once it was mentioned. However, my curiosity went away when I was informed that if we went the porcine route, Ole Snouty would eventually be welcomed at our dinner table. Looking back now, I don't think any of it was serious, but at the time, I didn't know that. But yes, in Pokemon World, some people do actually eat some Pokemon.
But there was a wonderful, almost literary moment as Ian was explaining the Pokemon-eating thing to me - more or less as follows:
"It's one of those things like frog legs - French frog legs you know; it's considered a delicacy but ultimately it's really gross."
Sometimes our Pokemon discussions get pretty interesting.
