The not-entirely-hereditary gift of leadership
In November, Amy came back from parent-teacher night with good reports from Ian's teachers - both the homeroom teacher and the teacher that coordinates special enrichment classes with him and a small group of selected peers. Her enthusiasm had turned positively curricular: she was thinking of having Ian come up with some kind of brain-teaser one day a week and see if the class could solve it. This reminded me of some crafts segment of Ian's class from a few years ago, where the teacher would have Ian present his project and then explain to the class how he did it.
I certainly can't think of any precedent for that in my own life, but my older brother, Ian's godfather, stood out a bit in his classroom - probably all the way through graduate school. As we often observe, some genes seem to originate in Baptism rather than birth.
