Impeccable Rationing of Limited Resources

A few weeks ago, I bought the children a package of Gummy Bursts - a Gummy-Bear type of chewy candy with Starbursts' flavors.  Ian was uncharacteristically legalistic in the way that he attempted to dictate the two possible algorithms he would tolerate in the distribution of leftover candies, should it turn out that the number available to be shared with Daniel and Madeleine wasn't evenly divisible by three.  Apparently he wanted to avoid the horror of one of the three stakeholders ending up with any portion greater or lesser than the other two:

"If there's a remainder of 1 or zero, you may have it or give it to Mom!"
