Bedtime for Basho
One night, as I was putting Ian to bed. I think lights-out had already taken place, and I was going downstairs to get something to accommodate his endemic bedtime hunger-and-drought. Whether the lights are on has no real bearing on the state of Ian's mental activity - except that it implies that rather than reading, he'll be thinking, perhaps even creating some design or mental construct in its nascent form. In any case, on this particular night, he told me how he would be spending this time - post lights-out but prior to sleep - in a way that I found extremely credible, since it fit his inner world so perfectly:
"I'll be lying in bed trying to make a haiku."
