Meeting the Maria von Trapp of New Hampshire
Today, Ian's class had a field trip to our exiting state capital, Concord. He told me he visited both the legislative branch and the judicial branch. (We didn't get too caught up in the petty details of the edifices that houses these branches.) He saw birches outside the state capital - our state tree - and also the purple lilac - our state flower, but he didn't see any pink lady's slippers - our state wildflower. His classmate's father is a state senator, so he came out and had showed the kids around the senate chamber - and "we sat in the senators' seats." Pictures were taken. And finally, the executive made an unexpected appearance.
Our governor is currently a woman, so Ian was very careful to make sure he did justice to gender when he identified her - no doubt influenced somewhat by attention to detail that he's undergoing in learning Latin:
"We saw the governor - uh, governess."
