School of Pokemon
One night about a week ago, when he was supposed to be in bed, Ian was up sitting on the boys' bathroom floor, furiously jotting down some questions for a test. The subject of the test turned out to be Pokemon, and Ian was in a hurry because he had intended to administer the test to Amy before going to bed. Fortunately for her, she didn't have to complete the test that night; she had about a week to turn it in - actually I think the deadline was exactly one week from start-time. That would give Mommy some time to find things out and provide sensible answers. This turned out to be an open-book test of sorts; Ian actually embraced the term "reading period," once I told him what it was, to talk about the timeline of this short semester.
Then he started sharing some information with me about Pokemon, and provided the following insider tip:
"You might wanna write that on your homework"
Apparently he was giving me the answer to a question that will be on my homework, when I get it. It turns out that I'll have some homework, and then a reading period, and finally the test itself. Ian described the arrangement to me, and I told him it sounded like there was a reading period between the homework phase and the exam phase. He liked that term, and immediately incorporated it into his institutional vocabulary.
The beauty of this endeavor is that we're all learning, all the time.
