A Driveway Colored With Love
The other evening, I pulled into a driveway that was "chalk-full" of colorful art - mostly by Ian, who used large, multi-colored chunks of chalk to render various images and quotations over much of the driveway and even on the walkway leading up to the house.
The walkway had about five hearts - some blue with red edges, some red with blue edges, and a few more varieties.
A huge hopscotch "court" took up the space in front of the garage doors. A large stick-figurish character took up half the driveway, almost looking like something out of the late-night surreal-cartoons-for-grownups lineup, but the face looked both like Daniel's work and a bit like Daniel himself. I suspect this was the one non-Ian contribution to the giant concrete canvas.
Most moving, perhaps, was a gigantic pinkish-red heart with a dog's profile colored into the center and the caption, "I love dogs."
But also there were two quotations, both from the world of entertainment, but surely both meant completely in earnest, much the way that an English major might quote Spencer or Frost:
"Home is where the heart is." -Phineas and Ferb
"Home is where someone loves you." - Bengi [sic]
All of this domestic beautification gave the impression that Ian loves his home, and feels loved here. Certainly among the most uplifting, encouraging art I've seen in my own life.
