Deconstructing Granite State Values

Ian and I were examining vanity plates, license plates in general, and car stickers in the parking lot of the little league park last night, and he asked a probing question about our own state's motto, which so many people simply accept as a given:

"But Dad, why do they put little things on the car like 'Live Free or Die'?  Is that supposed to be something important, or something?"
