Yippie Ki Yay!
I generally don't play the radio when I have the children in the car. The main reason is that I think I should be available to them, in case they want to talk to me - and also, it's fun to hear them talk to each other. Another reason is that I don't think they'd enjoy talk radio. A third reason is that the kind of music I like to listen to would either raise hackles (classical/baroque) or be a bad influence on them (rock-n-roll). But lately, Daniel has started to request the radio, and this poses a potential problem, since he also turns out to like rock-n-roll (although generally not my type). Last Sunday morning, he asked me to turn the radio on, and I had a ready-made defense in the great inter-generational Kulturkampf: we were on our way to church, so we really shouldn't listen to anything wild. So I did a bit of "scanning," and quickly discovered Randy Travis. I figured this was a good compromise, especially since I like the song. But, of course, the children aren't terribly accustomed to hearing country music, and I absolutely loved his characterization of it, without any prior introduction to the term "Country and Western":
"That just sounds like an Old-West song."
