Putting Nihilism To Rest
Tonight, Daniel and I were having a Dinner of the Daniels on the town, and, quite abruptly, he paused from his Vietnamese beef and noodle soup (a.k.a. "pho"), and announced:
"Daddy, there's actually no such thing as nothing."
He then explained that, because there is air everywhere, that doesn't leave any room for nothing. I didn't take on the oxygen-based assertion, but I pointed out that, since God is everywhere, there isn't any space for nothing (or nothingness). But in all honesty, I never would have arrived at such a deep metaphysical insight on my own. It might sound simplistic, but it's actually a very essential way of thinking about existence and the cosmos, emanating from a seven-year-old.
