City Boy Trapped in Bucolic New England
This evening, on the way home from Russian math, Daniel was spontaneously reflecting on his feelings about the two cities that he knows, more or less as follows:
"I think I like New York little bit better than Boston, but Boston's still pretty cool. I like New York, even though it's trashed."
This is true. When Daniel and I were in New York in March, he really took some time to process the ubiquity of trash - on the street, in the subway, on the subway tracks, etc. I tried to explain to him that that's just how New York is, and has been for all of my life - it just comes with the package.
I think he's okay with that now. He's really New York material - none of this milktoasty Boston stuff. And even the New York of 2012 isn't really his speed - he would have been more in his element sometime in the early 70's, when it was considerably more raw.
