A Role Model for Dad

Ian surprises me rather regularly with his unusual degree of thoughtfulness - both in terms of good intentions and also in the quality of thought, itself.

On Saturday, we were trying to select a movie to attend, to celebrate Madeleine's namesday, and Ian had already been lobbying for Ice Age 4.  However, when I told him about a showing at a nearby theater, he requested that we not go see it, unless it's being shown in 2D, rather than 3D.  It took me awhile to figure out that he was actively requesting 2D - I think he really likes 3D movies.  And when I asked him why he only wanted to see it in 2D, he explained something like "Madeleine doesn't like wearing the 3D glasses," which is true.

Tonight, Daniel was going to pieces at bed-time, because his "Bey Blade" - a postmodern military-grade top - was missing.  Ian wanted to ask me for a favor, and when he got time alone with me, he asked whether we could go to Toys R Us.  I told him that we certainly couldn't go there tonight, but maybe soon.  Why did he want to go there?  Because he wanted to get Daniel a new Bey Blade.  When Daniel came back into the room, Ian asked him, in a studiedly academic way, what make/model of Bey Blade he might prefer, if he were to get a new one.

The book of Proverbs, I think, says some things about what a joy a good child is to his parents. And in this, as in everything else, the Good Book is right.
