Humbling Empathy
One night, in the course of telling a larger story, I mentioned to Ian that I had had a boss, years ago, who didn't like me. [The feelings were entirely mutual, but I figured that Ian didn't need to hear that.] But I was very touched by his instantaneous confusion:
"Why wouldn't anyone be happy to have such a talented person working for them?"
As I might have mentioned before, I'm very proud of that boy. He has tremendous sensitivity and eloquence and, it turns out, remarkable discernment...
