Confidence

When I went to pick Ian up from Russian Math class tonight, he asked if the young'uns could watch a movie once Ian got home. I told him that tonight this was not a possibility; Mommy had called me at work, and mentioned that at Ian's school, they're going to be having tests all week - the Iowas, or the Nebraskas, or the Kansases, or something like that - so he needs to go to bed early, so he'll be ready for the test. After all, if you do badly in these standardized exams in our school system - and probably in much of America - you're stuck in the not-so-tracked crowd, reading Highlights for Children and counting jelly beans for English and Math until 10th or 11th grade.

But Ian raised a point I hadn't considered - or even realized:

"But Daddy - I've never gotten anything wrong on a test before."
