Basic Distinctions

Daniel wanted me to cut up a pear for him, but his stir-fry was sitting on the dining room table, apparently untouched. I told him he could have the pear for dessert, but he needs to eat his supper now.

Daniel objected to my conflation of pears with proper dessert foods:

"No, Daddy - not for dessert. Can't I have a dessert for dessert?"
