Deconstructing Newspeak

Tonight, when I was typing on my laptop, Ian took note of my shorthand for the current date - 20111226 - and, after I explained the notation to him, asked a couple of very logical questions:

"Daddy, why did you smoosh them all together? Do you really need to do that?"
