A Hat Worthy of Publicity
Daniel has embraced The Birthday Season with a touching, and very appropriate, ritual solemnity. We went to Toys R Us a week ago, to cash in on a $3 voucher that they sent him in anticipation of his birthday (you may be sure that they got their money back; especially since they told him, during his tour of the store, that since it was his birthday, his parents had to buy him whatever he wanted. Charlatans R Us, but that's another story...
In any case, they gave him a birthday crown and a birthday balloon, complete with "Geoffrey the Giraffe," and he proudly wore and carried his birthday emblems.
Then at school, they made him a birthday crown that said "6" in two places, as well as the usual identifiers of "Daniel" and "Happy Birthday." Daniel wore this at home, and on Sunday morning, he wore it in the car on the way to church. I was afraid he might try to wear it into church; we're not exactly Unitarians, so the whole birthday-church-gear thing might not have worked out very well... But he left it in the car.
But tonight, at one point, I said, "Boys, I must put you to bed," and Daniel pointed out an even more pressing duty than this bedtime business:
"...And you must take a picture of me and the birthday crown?"
He was right. I had to do it. Anyone who looks so perfect in a birthday hat should be photographed as much as possible. So I have a few more digital photos of Daniel squinting with a broad grin, proudly wearing the ceremonial Birthday Headgear.
