We must fit somewhere in this story...
Daniel, tonight, was preoccupied with the question: "What can break glass?" For example, can finger nails break glass?
This was a recurring inquiry, on Daniel's part, over the course of the evening, and eventually, I broke out of the narrow scope of the question, and mentioned that, at a Jewish wedding, the groom can actually break a glass. Of course, the boys wanted to know more about, so I went online to find out the history behind this practice, and it turns out, in part, to be a reference to the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem in AD 70.
Of course, with that audience, an elliptical reference simply doesn't do the trick. Daniel, especially, wanted to know more, so I put the event in the context of the Jewish revolt against the Romans. At that point, he asked a perfectly logical question: "Which are we - the Jewish or the Romans?"
