Enigma

Daniel likes to make me guess things, and when he says "Guess," it's an imperative, not a brief ritual en route to his own voluntary disclosure of the great mystery. "Guess" means that I have to generate somewhere between five and ten guesses before he gives up and tells me what I should have guessed. And often, there are no real clues. But tonight was special...

I was driving, and he was in the "first row" of back seats in the mini-van, so I could sort-of see what he had, but not really, and he had made a figure out of play-dough, and he told me to guess what it was, so I rifled through the usual monosyllabic zoological suspects - dog, cat, horse, cow, etc., but no - this was a person, but somehow it was also a dessert. This definitely confused me, but then he gave me a final hint which made it clear that I would never be able to fathom the correct answer:

"It' ginger, it's bread, and he's a man."
