Hurricanes: The Seven-Year-Old-Boy Perspective

With Hurricane Irene working its way up the East Coast, Ian has formulated a very particular prayer, which he told me about the other night: At once, he is praying that the hurricane cause no damage, and also that he, himself, manage to see it from the inside, and experience the eye of the storm.

I don't know why he's so interested in the eye of the storm per se, except that I told him my not-so-spectacular, single hurrican story, about Hurricane Belle hitting Boston sometime in the late 1970's. I told him that I experienced the eye of the storm, and that it was surprisingly mild. Ian was very interested in this "war story," and wants me to share it with adults, in case they have no idea what a hurricane is like.
