A Real Independence Day
Today Ian and I played our first "real"* game of chess. Ian quickly caught on to the rules and dynamics. One helpful category was the "skateboard" metaphor - queens, bishops and rooks all have "skateboards," according to one introductory chess set that we have, in that they can move any number of spaces until they hit an obstacle or a captive, whereas most other pieces can only move one space.
Of course, Ian won. A very appropriate step in "independence" for the Fourth of July.
*"Real" chess is where the pieces move according to the rules of chess, rather than as glorified checker pieces.
