Mothers Day Comes Early

Daniel's preschool held a Mother's Day Tea on Friday afternoon, which Amy attended, and where she cried. The children stayed in the hall while the mothers sat in the classroom, and one by one, each came into the class and gave their mother a paper flower. The teacher had cut out the children's side profiles - apparently very realistically, from photographs - and the mothers had the task of figuring out which child was theirs. Amy said that she saw several which could be Daniel's profile, many which definitely weren't, but when she saw his actual profile, she recognized it immediately.

Likewise, there was an exercise where the mothers saw, on a board, cards on which the teacher had written the children's dictation of "What's special about my mom," and they had to figure out which card and quotation belonged to their child. Again, Amy saw a lot of "Maybe's," and some "No's," but when she saw Daniel's, there was no question as to the source. He had said something like, "My mom is special because she takes me to Fun World, [Amy didn't remember the second asset]... and she reads me 'The Three Billy-Goats Gruff in Voices'."

Apparently, "Voices" means that each goat gets its own voice, probably with the smallest goat in high soprano, etc.

When both boys were home, there was some disagreement as to when Mother's Day was. Ian asserted that Mother's Day was coming up on Sunday, but Daniel corrected him, "Mother's Day just happened." Ian said, "No!" and Daniel clarified, in a voice straining to be understood, "Ian - really! For me!"
