Daniel has a wit.

The boys had the gerbils out, and as I was letting the dogs out of their crate, Ian asked me not to let them into the main part of the house, so that they wouldn't eat the gerbils.

Then young Daniel quipped:

"Sorry, gerbils are not on the menu."

Not bad, especially for a five-year-old...
