Why do people have this fuzz?

Ian sometimes shows affection in his own gentle way, often in otherwise entirely casual settings. Tonight, I was sitting on the living room floor discussing Pokemon culture with him, he started tenderly brushing the inside of my right ear with his finger and asked:

"Why do people grow hair on their faces and in their ears?"

(I grow hair on my face as well, but that's more of a conscious choice...)
