Know Thyself

The other day in a bookstore, I came across a book for children about real pirates. I thought it would be perfect for Daniel, but when I leafed through it, I saw drawings showing how pirates executed their victims and other atrocious bits of information. So I told Daniel that I almost got him a book about real pirates, but it turns out that they do such awful things that I decided not to get it.

I was very impressed with his response, indicating an awareness that he wasn't ready for anything too terrible, but that he is also getting more mature over time:

"Next time maybe you can get it when I'm bigger."

Then he added something like, "Maybe you can get it for me when I'm six."
