At this very minute, Ian is sitting on a sofa-cushion on the floor, with Golden lying next to him, reading Golden a story about a dog who could talk. This is no coincidence: Ian believes that dogs in general, and Golden in particular, fundamentally comprehend the speech of people around them, even though they can't reciprocate.
