*For those who have been spared, Zhu-zhu pets are the latest rage in conspicuous consumption for small children. They really do look like guinea pigs, only smaller, brighter-colored, and made of plastic and fuzz, but the difference is that guinea pigs actually sleep for something approaching half the day; zhu-zhu pets, if you accidentally step on one in the middle of the night, will emit a random stream of high-pitched nonsense syllables every minute or two for an indefinite period of time.
