Nuclear Shield

This morning, Ian and I had annual eye appointment check-ups, and while we were waiting, I mentioned that the eye cells (rods and cones) are among the only cells in the human body (with brain cells) that cannot be regenerated, and that's an excellent reason to take especially good care of one's eyes, by wearing goggles whenever you're working with any material that could give off anything that could go into the eyes.

This afternoon, Ian and Daniel were swinging cords around like ropes, playfully threatening each other in a mock- (or potential-) fight. I quickly told them that they could put someone's eye out with that kind of swinging (timeless wisdom on the subject of children swinging ropes, etc.).

Within a matter of minutes, Ian made the following announcement:

"Daddy, I'm wearing glasses so my eyes don't get poked out."

I looked over, and sure enough, he was wearing Madeleine's stylish pink, heart-shaped mini-mouse sunglasses as he swung a computer cord in the air.

Not to be outdone, Daniel put on a green pair of plastic sunglasses with start-shaped "lenses" (only without any glass or plastic in the frame). They would have made Elton John extremely envious, circa 1974, during the Golden Age of the Pinball Wizard.

Of course, Ian quickly pointed out that the absence of plastic or glass within the frames made Daniel completely vulnerable to assault.

Luckily, no such assault has occurred, due in part to a parental "peace-keeping" presence.
