What some people do
I was getting the boys a snack the other day - we had had a long day on the road, but I didn't want to spoil their appetite for supper, or give them too much junk, so I decided that the three of us could share an order of French fries from Wendy's drive-through, and I explained to them that it was just a snack. However, the boys apparently actually wanted hamburgers. But Daniel found a pleasantly abstract way of establishing the principle per se, without issuing an immediate demand based on that idea's practical implications. As I was placing the order, he yelled from the back seat:
"Sometimes people have hamburgers for snacks!"
