Prince Edward Island

We have never been to Prince Edward Island. (Okay, Amy has, but that was before I met her.)

But for some reason, the good provincial government of Prince Edward Island sent us a promotional CD several years ago, obviously part of a tourism push, and at this moment, Ian is dancing to it. In fact, "Prince Edward Island" is his favorite song, as he just proclaimed; he has fond memories of singing it with me "in the Camry", back when we had one (Ian is very good at providing reliable historical coordinates.)

The main song on this CD is a song named, creatively, "Prince Edward Island," and it's actually about Prince Edward Island, and what a great place it is. The refrain is "Tonight we'll sing, Tonight we'll shout, 'Prince Edward Island.'" It's a very Celtic ditty, no doubt appropriate to the Province, (like Nova Scotia, where "my own people", themselves supremely Celtic, came from). It has lots of fiddle-music, a good rhythm, and a nice, fast pace, and it has been one of their favorites for some time.

It all started when I had run out of CD's to play them in the car, but this freeby happened to be lying around in th CD case and I gave it a whirl. It worked. They love to sing along (and shout), "PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND!" And Ian even has a jig for the tune, very much like the jigs I used to do, always to non-Celtic music, at weddings back before I got married and had to pretend to be a grown-up a bit more. That isnt lost on anybody either - that Ian dances just like his daddy, which is always a great compliment.

But I just think it's hilarious that an extended commercial on CD, from the provincial Department of Tourism and Commerce (or whatever it's called), it an absolute top-favorite among the two lads. It's actually a really good CD, too - especially if you're already a Celt...

Nice to hear that some Tourism PEI's promotional efforts are having a lingering impact....even if it hasn't prompted you to actually come to our beautiful Island. When you do decide it's time to visit, let us know...we'd be happy to help make it a truly memorable experience www.experiencepei.ca

Cheers
